Questo problema di ordine drammatico non sembra preoccupare Vivaldi: la cinquantina di concerti doppi, scritti ed eseguiti all’Ospedale della Pietà di Venezia, testimoniano quanto fosse a proprio agio nel raffrontare due ego. I solisti infatti assumono il ruolo di protagonisti, diversamente dal modello del concerto grosso, utilizzando e stimolando giochi retorici e virtuosismi pirotecnici. This was, of course, some decades after Vivaldi s death but his spirit clearly lived on for one only has to substitute 'playing the violin' for 'singing' and the concerti on this disc are summed up ... utterly thrilling discoveries ... Their recent Il teatro alla modo disc of rarely heard solo violin concertos (Harmonia Mundi, 12/15) was an ear-opener, and the ability it showed to expose the music s inner dialogues finds further expression in this new disc of double concertos, with Carmignola as guest soloist. These are performances that burst with life, and right from the unaccompanied sparring between the soloists at the beginning of the first track (RV507) there is not a dull moment: the echo games in the finale of RV505 are brilliantly realised, no two of them quite the same, and even the solo-less ripieno concerto , RV127, included in the programme is somehow made urgently expressive.
