Amandine Beyer, violino; Gli Incogniti OPINIÓN PERFORMANCE: ***** --Nicholas Kenyon The Observer, 9th October 2016 'Gli Incogniti are another of those extraordinary groups for whom Vivaldi's virtuoso writing holds no terrors ... Listening to this disc was an amazing experience because we ordinary humans can t do what they do. Charles Burney is quoted in the booklet reporting the singing of the girls of the Ospedale della Pietà, they 'played a thousand tricks in singing, particularly in the duets, where there was a trial of skill and of natural powers, as who could go highest, lowest, swell a note the longest, or run divisions with the greatest rapidity'. This was, of course, some decades after Vivaldi s death but his spirit clearly lived on for one only has to substitute 'playing the violin' for 'singing' and the concerti on this disc are summed up ... utterly thrilling discoveries ... This issue is to be bought immediately by all lovers of the Italian baroque!' --Dave Billinge MusicWeb International, 16th November 2016 GRAMOPHONE EDITOR S CHOICE 'Amandine Beyer s orchestra has impressed many with its dynamic performances of Baroque string repertoire, revealing a particular aptitude for identifying the contours of Vivaldi s music and communicating its heady power to entrance. Their recent Il teatro alla modo disc of rarely heard solo violin concertos (Harmonia Mundi, 12/15) was an ear-opener, and the ability it showed to expose the music s inner dialogues finds further expression in this new disc of double concertos, with Carmignola as guest soloist. These are performances that burst with life, and right from the unaccompanied sparring between the soloists at the beginning of the first track (RV507) there is not a dull moment: the echo games in the finale of RV505 are brilliantly realised, no two of them quite the same, and even the solo-less ripieno concerto , RV127, included in the programme is somehow made urgently expressive. The tone of soloists and orchestra alike is rich and vital, and the recording has the right mix of clarity and bloom.' --Lindsay Kemp Gramophone, December 2016
